Who is a sworn translator?

A sworn translator is the holder of an office in public law who is empowered by the state to certify the correctness of translations of documents translated by the translator himself or herself or by another person, the authenticity of copies of such translations and the authenticity of copies of documents. A sworn translator certifies the correctness of a translation itself unlike most Estonian notaries who only authenticate the signature of a translator under a translation. Sworn translator of English and sworn translator of Spanish-Estonian

A sworn translator of the English language can certify the correctness of translations from Estonian into English as well as from English into Estonian. A sworn translator of Spanish-Estonian can certify the correctness of translations from Spanish into Estonian (and into English). Professional Certificate No. 98 of Sworn Translator of English and Spanish-Estonian was granted to Pille Lindpere on 15 September 2017.

The profession of a sworn translator was created in 2003 when the first exams for attesting the most qualified translators were organised by the state. A sworn translator is qualified to certify translations under the Sworn Translators Act.
